Norway secured a 3-2 victory over Senegal in the 2026 World Cup Group I match held at New York/New Jersey Stadium on June 23. Despite taking a comfortable lead, Norway faced late pressure after Senegal managed to cut the deficit in the closing minutes.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland stole the spotlight after scoring twice in the 48th and 58th minutes. Norway’s other goal was scored by Marcus Holmgren Pedersen. With those goals, Haaland has now recorded four goals in just two matches, making him Norway’s all-time top scorer in World Cup history.

Senegal responded with strong resistance through Ismaila Sarr, who scored twice, including a late goal that made the final moments tense for Norway.

Beyond the match itself, the game also caught the attention of the crypto community. Blockchain-based prediction market platform Polymarket recorded more than $32 million in trading volume tied to this single group-stage match. Before kickoff, Norway’s winning probability on the platform stood at around 95.5%.

The 2026 World Cup has also fueled activity across digital assets such as fan tokens, meme coins, and sports-related cryptocurrencies, although trading activity remains relatively limited. One example is a Haaland-themed meme token on the Solana network, but its market activity has remained quiet so far.

Interestingly, Haaland already has ties to blockchain technology through Sorare, a fantasy football platform powered by NFT (Non-Fungible Token) technology.

This trend highlights the growing connection between the sports industry and the crypto ecosystem, especially through prediction markets that are increasingly attracting retail investor attention. However, regulation remains a challenge, as crypto-based betting and prediction platforms still operate in a legal gray area in many countries.
