Coinbase Enables Businesses to Accept USDC Payments From AI Agents
Crypto exchange Coinbase has launched new features that allow businesses to accept USD Coin (USDC) payments from AI agents. The announcement was made on July 23, 2026, alongside new trading commands for users and a software development kit (SDK) for integrating x402 payments into online services.
Coinbase said that in June 2026, software-generated traffic surpassed human traffic on its Base documentation pages for the first time. According to the company, most online payment systems are still designed with the assumption that “a human is clicking the button,” making them ill-suited for autonomous software and AI-powered transactions.
Coinbase Business Adds AI Agent Payments
Starting this week, Coinbase Business users can accept USDC payments sent by AI agents. The feature is powered by Coinbase Payments, while native x402 support enables internet-based pay-per-use transactions.
Businesses can receive, track, reconcile, and cash out AI agent payments through the same Coinbase Business account they use for other payment activities.
Coinbase Business also offers rewards on eligible idle USDC balances. The platform currently lists an annual reward rate of 3.35%, although the rate may vary by region and is subject to change.
Additionally, Coinbase said USDC payments carry no chargeback risk because the exchange is not a party to transactions between businesses and their customers.
New Trading Commands for Coinbase for Agents
Coinbase has also expanded Coinbase for Agents by introducing real-time market data and conditional trading actions.
The new commands allow AI agents to stream open orders, view an asset’s order book, and monitor live price and trading volume data.
Users can also set predefined conditions that automatically trigger actions such as buying, selling, or canceling orders. For example, an AI agent can be instructed to sell assets if Bitcoin falls below a specified price or cancel an order after a fixed period.
Coinbase for Agents already enables authorized AI tools to trade cryptocurrencies, manage portfolios, and execute financial workflows through linked Coinbase accounts.
Coinbase Launches CDP x402 SDK for Developers
Coinbase Developer Platform (CDP) has also introduced the CDP x402 SDK, allowing developers to add AI agent payment capabilities to APIs, Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, and web services with minimal code.
According to Coinbase, the SDK comes preconfigured with its preferred infrastructure and extensions, reducing the manual work required to select payment middleware and service providers.
The x402 standard uses the HTTP 402 Payment Required response to send payment instructions directly between an online service and a client. An AI agent can receive the request, sign a stablecoin payment, and retry access with proof of payment.
Coinbase first introduced the open x402 standard in May 2025 to support APIs, applications, and autonomous AI agents.
The latest release builds on Coinbase’s broader AI payments ecosystem. In May 2026, Amazon integrated Coinbase x402 into Bedrock AgentCore Payments, allowing AI agents to pay for services using USDC. Earlier, in April 2026, Coinbase-backed x402 was also used to launch Agentic.market, a platform that helps AI agents discover and purchase compatible online services.
Coinbase has not disclosed the payment volume it expects the new feature to generate.
According to the company, the three product updates are designed for businesses accepting payments, individuals managing AI-powered financial agents, and developers building AI-driven services. The rollout remains subject to user controls, regional availability, and product support. Coinbase Business is currently available in the United States and Singapore, while features and USDC reward rates may vary by market.
