Beeple Makes the Most Controversial NFT Move of the Year

Beeple, a famous digital artist, held an event at Beeple Studios in Charleston, South Carolina. The event was meant to celebrate the iconic CryptoPunks NFTs, but it quickly became one of the most talked-about moments in the NFT community this week.

During the event, Beeple showed what looked like a recorded interview with Matt Hall and John Watkinson, the creators of CryptoPunks. In the video, they claimed that Nakamigos NFTs actually came before CryptoPunks and were part of a secret Larva Labs project. They even did a dramatic countdown to reveal something called “V0 Punks”, connecting the made-up story to Nakamigos.

Many believed the story, and within hours, the price of Nakamigos NFTs jumped almost 140%, causing a lot of trading activity. Even though the price dropped later, at the time of reporting, Nakamigos were still up 25%, selling at around 0.23 ETH.

However, the video was quickly confirmed to be a joke or satire, likely made using AI. The whole “V0 Punks” story was completely fictional. In reality, CryptoPunks were launched in 2017, and there’s no connection between them and Nakamigos or Larva Labs.

The NFT community had mixed reactions. Some people were upset, while others saw it as a fun and creative way to bring some life back into the space.

A well-known NFT figure, Beanie, commented:

“People are really mad at Beeple for this obvious troll. I think it’s time we start making NFTs fun again. If you lost money on this trade, that’s on you for not realizing Beeple is an epic troll.”
