Andrew Cuomo Plans to Appoint Chief Innovation Officer to Boost Blockchain and Tech in NYC

Independent New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo announced on Sunday that, if elected, he will create a new government position — Chief Innovation Officer — to promote blockchain, crypto, and other advanced technologies in the city.

Cuomo said the role would help New York stay ahead in industries that shape the future, such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and biotechnology. The officer would also help the city work more closely with private companies to adopt new technologies.

“The next Mayor must ensure New York leads in the technologies that will define the next century — AI, blockchain, and biotech,” Cuomo said.

The Chief Innovation Officer will focus on attracting investment and jobs from high-growth tech industries, while also improving public services through innovation and efficiency.

Cuomo’s campaign aims to position New York as the global center for digital finance and blockchain innovation. This includes reviewing outdated laws and replacing them with modern regulations that protect consumers while encouraging responsible technological growth.

The idea builds on efforts by current Mayor Eric Adams, who has already supported blockchain initiatives and held the city’s first crypto summit. Just last week, Adams signed an executive order to create a digital assets office to expand these projects.

Adams’ term will end on January 1, 2026, and the next mayoral election is scheduled for November 4, 2025.

If Cuomo wins, the new Chief Innovation Officer will be chosen with input from an innovation council made up of experts in AI, blockchain, and biotech. The council will continue working with the officer after the appointment to guide New York’s tech development.
