Kalshi’s U.S. Crypto Perpetual Futures Go Live, but Bitcoin May Lead Early Trading
Kalshi has officially launched U.S.-regulated crypto perpetual futures, moving beyond the approval stage into live trading.
The platform now offers perpetual futures for several cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), XRP, and HYPE. This marks an important step for the U.S. crypto derivatives market, but whether traders will actually use these products remains the biggest question.
Bitcoin Starts With a Strong Advantage
Now that trading is live, the focus shifts from regulation to market performance. Traders will pay close attention to factors such as liquidity, bid-ask spreads, trading fees, leverage, funding rates, and execution quality.
Among all listed assets, Bitcoin appears to have the strongest position. It has the largest spot trading volume, the most trusted pricing benchmarks, and the deepest liquidity, making it the most likely contract to attract active traders.
Other cryptocurrencies may gain traction over time, but they will need to build liquidity and trading activity before becoming major markets.
Regulation Opened the Door
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) approved KalshiEX’s Bitcoin perpetual futures contract on May 29. The regulator later provided additional guidance that allows certain digital asset perpetual futures to operate under U.S. futures rules.
However, regulatory approval alone does not guarantee success. A healthy futures market also needs active traders, market makers, and consistent liquidity, especially during periods of high market volatility.
Liquidity Will Determine Success
Kalshi’s crypto perpetual futures have different leverage limits depending on the asset. According to the company, Bitcoin offers up to 5.9x leverage, while Ethereum allows 4.5x, Solana 2.7x, XRP 2.8x, and HYPE 2.2x.
The platform also uses CF Benchmarks price indices to calculate funding payments and settlement prices, with Bitcoin referencing the Bitcoin Real Time Index.
These features influence how attractive the products are to traders. Tight spreads, strong liquidity, balanced funding rates, and reliable execution will likely determine whether traders continue using the platform after the initial launch.
Altcoins Face Tougher Competition
Although Kalshi supports several crypto assets, each altcoin must prove it can attract enough trading volume.
Ethereum already has a relatively mature market, but it competes with well-established global derivatives exchanges. Solana and XRP also have active spot markets, yet their futures contracts will need sufficient liquidity before professional traders are willing to trade them regularly.
HYPE presents a unique case because it is closely linked to the Hyperliquid ecosystem, which already offers a wide range of perpetual futures products with higher leverage.
Offshore Exchanges Remain Strong
Kalshi is entering a market already dominated by offshore crypto exchanges.
Platforms such as Hyperliquid offer more than 100 perpetual futures markets with leverage ranging from 3x to 40x. Meanwhile, Coinbase has also introduced a regulated pathway that gives U.S. customers access to global crypto perpetual futures through its partnership with Deribit.
As a result, U.S. traders now have more choices instead of relying solely on domestic exchanges.
Market Adoption Is the Real Test
The long-term success of Kalshi’s crypto perpetual futures will depend on whether traders consistently use the platform.
Bitcoin is expected to attract the most trading activity because of its established market and deep liquidity. The bigger challenge will be whether Ethereum, Solana, XRP, and HYPE can build enough volume to become liquid and competitive markets.
For now, Bitcoin appears to have the clearest path to success. The performance of the altcoin perpetual futures will become clearer as trading volume, liquidity, and market participation develop over time.
