China’s Kimi K3 Challenges U.S. AI Dominance, David Sacks Warns of Growing Competition
Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) model Kimi K3, developed by Moonshot AI, has achieved a major milestone by outperforming U.S. models Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 on the Frontend Code Arena, a leading benchmark for AI coding capabilities.
Kimi K3 scored 1,679 points, highlighting China’s rapid progress in narrowing the AI gap with the United States. The model is also reportedly 40% cheaper than its competitors while adopting an open-weight approach that gives developers greater flexibility to customize and deploy the model.
David Sacks, AI adviser to President Donald Trump and a well-known figure in the crypto and technology sectors, warned that the United States could lose its competitive edge if restrictive regulations continue to slow AI innovation. According to Sacks, while Washington remains cautious, China is rapidly introducing AI models that are more affordable, efficient, and accessible, making them increasingly attractive to businesses worldwide.
Sacks is a former PayPal Chief Operating Officer (COO) and an early investor in major technology companies, including Facebook, Uber, and SpaceX. He is also recognized for his involvement in the crypto industry, although his views on digital assets have shifted over time. In 2021, he criticized Bitcoin for its limited utility, but by 2023 he had expressed support for stablecoins and Web3 initiatives.
Despite the debate surrounding his changing positions, Sacks’ warning underscores the intensifying AI competition between the United States and China. Kimi K3’s strong performance signals that China is rapidly closing the technological gap, a trend that could also have broader implications for the crypto industry, where AI is playing an increasingly important role in blockchain development, automation, and digital finance.
